Three Rain Systems Active in Gujarat

Three rain systems active in Gujarat are expected to bring widespread showers, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall over the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple alerts for different districts, warning residents to remain cautious as intense rain activity is likely to continue till September 5.

Rainy Weather Grips Gujarat

Since early morning, several parts of Gujarat have been witnessing scattered rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning. The cloudy skies, frequent showers, and humid conditions have set the tone for a typical monsoon phase across the state. According to IMD, the current weather conditions are the result of three active rain systems around Gujarat.

These systems include:

  1. Cyclonic circulation over south-east Madhya Pradesh
  2. Cyclonic circulation over north Konkan
  3. Monsoon trough passing through Bikaner

Together, these factors have strengthened the monsoon currents and are expected to trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts of Gujarat in the first week of September.

Heavy Rainfall Prediction till September 5

The Meteorological Department has predicted that many regions of Gujarat will experience moderate to heavy rainfall between August 31 and September 5, 2025. Some districts are likely to see extremely heavy downpours, which may cause waterlogging, disruption in transportation, and local flooding.

On August 31, IMD declared a yellow alert for as many as 19 districts including Sabarkantha, Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Aravalli, Mahisagar, Kheda, Ahmedabad, Panchmahal, Dahod, Anand, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Bharuch, Narmada, Surat, Tapi, Dang, Navsari, and Valsad. These areas are likely to face thunderstorms along with heavy showers.

District-wise Forecast and Alerts

September 1–2

On the first two days of September, IMD has predicted heavy rainfall with thunderstorms in Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Mahisagar, Dahod, Panchmahal, Navsari, and Valsad. A yellow alert has been issued for these regions. Residents are advised to remain alert as waterlogging and damage to standing crops are possible.

September 3

On this day, Chhota Udepur and Narmada districts are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall, and hence, an orange alert has been declared. Apart from this, heavy rain with thunderstorms is predicted in Panchmahal, Dahod, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Tapi, Dang, Navsari, and Valsad districts, where yellow alerts are in place.

Thunderstorms with frequent lightning strikes are also likely on September 3. Farmers, outdoor workers, and residents in rural areas have been advised to take precautions against lightning-related risks.

September 4

On September 4, heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted across Saurashtra and South Gujarat districts. An orange alert has been issued for Tapi and Dang districts, while yellow alerts are in place for Gir Somnath, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Dahod, Panchmahal, Chhota Udepur, Bharuch, Narmada, Surat, Navsari, and Valsad.

September 5

On the final day of the IMD’s forecast period, 19 districts will again experience thunderstorms with heavy rainfall. These include Valsad, Navsari, Dang, Tapi, Surat, Narmada, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Kheda, Panchmahal, Dahod, Mahisagar, Aravalli, Sabarkantha, Gir Somnath, Amreli, and Bhavnagar.

Official Warnings and Precautions

The Meteorological Department has cautioned that during this period, local flooding and waterlogging are possible in low-lying areas. People living in flood-prone regions have been asked to stay prepared for emergency situations. Additionally, farmers have been urged to take protective measures for their crops, as heavy rainfall and strong winds may cause agricultural losses.

Authorities have also warned of thunder and lightning strikes, especially in districts where thunderstorms are expected. Residents are advised to:

  • Avoid standing under trees or near electric poles during lightning.
  • Stay indoors as much as possible during heavy showers.
  • Ensure proper drainage around houses to prevent waterlogging.
  • Keep emergency supplies ready in case of power cuts or flooding.

Why Gujarat is Seeing Intense Rainfall?

The reason behind the heavy rainfall is the combination of three rain systems active in Gujarat. The cyclonic circulations in Madhya Pradesh and Konkan are pushing moist winds into Gujarat, while the monsoon trough line passing through Bikaner is further strengthening rainfall intensity.

This alignment of multiple weather systems often leads to continuous showers and thunderstorm activity across large areas. Meteorologists believe that the present situation is a classic case of an “active monsoon phase” over western India.

Impact on Daily Life

The forecast of continuous heavy rainfall is expected to impact transportation, agriculture, and daily life in Gujarat. Low-lying areas may experience waterlogging, and rural regions might face difficulties due to overflowing streams and rivers.

Rail and road connectivity may also be disrupted in parts of South Gujarat and central Gujarat. Meanwhile, city authorities in Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara are already preparing for possible heavy downpours by clearing drainage systems and mobilizing disaster response teams.

Conclusion

As three rain systems active in Gujarat continue to influence the state’s weather, residents are likely to experience frequent showers, thunder, and lightning in the coming week. Authorities have already put disaster management teams on standby, especially in districts under orange alerts.

The IMD has urged people not to panic but to stay informed and follow safety guidelines. With proper preparedness, the state can minimize the risks of flooding and damage, even as the monsoon brings much-needed water to reservoirs and farmlands.
