Is ChatGPT Down?: If you’ve been trying to use ChatGPT recently only to be met with error messages, you’re not alone. A significant number of users across the globe are reporting a major service outage, and the frustration is pouring onto social media.
According to DownDetector, a popular website that tracks online service outages, hundreds of users have reported problems with the AI chatbot in the last 20 minutes. The issue seems to be affecting a large number of users worldwide, including in India, where over 439 users have flagged issues on the monitoring platform.
The developer of ChatGPT, OpenAI, has not yet released an official statement addressing this current disruption. Interestingly, the outage doesn’t seem to be uniform. While some users are reporting that ChatGPT is working perfectly fine for them, others are experiencing persistent network errors that are affecting both the website and the mobile app versions, making the service completely inaccessible.
A Look Back: ChatGPT’s History of Recent Outages
This isn’t the first time ChatGPT has gone down. The service has experienced several notable disruptions in the recent past, including:

- January 23, 2025: Users in countries like Spain, Argentina, and the United States faced a widespread access disruption that lasted for over three hours.
- December 26, 2024: A similar glitch brought the AI giant to a standstill.
The platform has also seen more brief, intermittent issues. In the last 24 hours alone, there have been shorter incidents reported on September 3rd (lasting about 10 minutes), September 2nd, and September 1st of 2025.
