The ongoing controversy over the relocation of elephant Madhuri in Kolhapur has taken a new turn as Vantara, the animal rescue and rehabilitation centre led by Anant Ambani, announced its full support for Madhuri’s return. Amid widespread protests and emotional appeals from devotees, Vantara has proposed setting up a dedicated satellite rehabilitation centre for Madhuri in Nandani village, Kolhapur.
Elephant Madhuri in Kolhapur
In an official statement, Vantara acknowledged the deep religious and cultural significance that Madhuri, also known as Mahadevi, holds for the Jain Matha and the people of Kolhapur. For decades, Madhuri has been a part of the spiritual traditions and daily life of the Jain community. Her presence is not just symbolic but is considered an essential part of religious practices, festivals, and community gatherings.
Vantara clarified that its involvement in the relocation of elephant Madhuri in Kolhapur was solely based on the binding orders issued by the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court. The organisation emphasized that it did not initiate or request Madhuri’s transfer from Kolhapur to Jamnagar. Vantara’s role was limited to providing a safe environment, veterinary care, and housing as an independent rescue facility.
“At no point did Vantara intend to interfere with religious sentiments or traditions,” the official statement read. “We acted strictly under court directives and had no role in making the decision to relocate Madhuri. Our focus has always been on the welfare of animals while respecting the cultural values of communities.”
Responding to the rising demands for Madhuri’s return, Vantara expressed its willingness to support any petition filed by the Jain Matha and the Government of Maharashtra before the Hon’ble Court, requesting that Madhuri be allowed to go back to Kolhapur. Vantara assured full cooperation in ensuring a smooth and dignified return for Madhuri, subject to court approval.
As a proactive step, Vantara has proposed establishing a satellite rehabilitation centre for elephant Madhuri in Kolhapur’s Nandani village. This facility will be developed in close collaboration with the Jain Matha and the State Government, ensuring that Madhuri receives top-quality care while remaining in her spiritual home. The centre will follow animal welfare guidelines laid down by the High Powered Committee and align with global best practices in elephant rehabilitation.
Features of the Proposed Rehabilitation Centre for Madhuri
The satellite centre proposed by Vantara will be equipped with modern amenities designed specifically for Madhuri’s physical and emotional well-being. The facility will include:
- A hydrotherapy pond to provide joint and muscle relief.
- A large natural water body for swimming and free movement.
- A specialised laser therapy and physiotherapy room for advanced treatments.
- A covered night shelter to ensure protection and comfortable rest.
- An open lush habitat where Madhuri can move freely without chains.
- A sand pit area for environmental enrichment and to encourage natural elephant behaviors.
- A fully-equipped veterinary clinic for round-the-clock medical assistance.
- A rubberised flooring platform for safe and cushioned resting.
- Specially created soft sand mounds to assist Madhuri in resting postures, relieving arthritis, foot rot, and joint stress.
Vantara has assured that the land for this facility will be selected in full consultation with the Jain Matha and the Maharashtra Government. The project will only move forward after securing necessary permissions, grants, and with the consent of all stakeholders.

Importantly, Vantara has stated that this proposal is being put forward not for recognition or credit but purely to assist in implementing any directive that may be issued by the Court concerning Madhuri’s future care. The centre’s establishment is a recommendation and not a mandatory condition. Vantara has also shown openness to any alternative proposal that the Jain Matha may wish to suggest, in line with the Court’s final verdict.
The world’s largest elephant rehabilitation facility further expressed regret if their court-mandated involvement has caused any distress to the Jain community or the people of Kolhapur. The statement concluded with a heartfelt “Michhami Dukkadam”, a traditional Jain expression seeking forgiveness for any unintentional hurt caused.
