The grand ceremony was attended by several dignitaries including Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Gujarat Minister of State for Home Shri Harsh Sanghavi, and numerous other prominent figures from the political and sports spheres.
The inauguration of this massive, state-of-the-art sports complex marks a significant milestone in India’s journey towards becoming a global sports powerhouse. Spanning over 1,19,000 square meters, the complex has been developed at a cost of approximately ₹825 crore, jointly by the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat, and boasts facilities that meet international standards for multiple sports disciplines.
A World-Class Sports Facility for the Nation
Addressing the audience, Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah emphasized that the idea of establishing a world-class sports complex in Ahmedabad was initially discussed with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. “The Prime Minister instructed that this complex should not only meet international standards but also serve as a center for nurturing sports talent across the country,” Shri Shah said.
He further stated, “The Veer Savarkar Sports Complex is now ready and stands as the largest and most modern sports complex in India, equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure for athletes and sports enthusiasts alike.”
Shri Shah highlighted that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, India aims to no longer be second in any global field. “By 2047, our target is to make India number one in every domain, including sports, and this complex is a vital step toward achieving that goal,” he added.
Honoring a National Hero
The sports complex has been named after the great freedom fighter Veer Savarkar, whose extraordinary courage and determination continue to inspire generations. Shri Amit Shah recounted Savarkar’s remarkable escape from British captivity at Marseille port, France, when he swam in chains to reach French soil before being re-arrested.
“The athletes training at this complex will not only aim to win medals but will be inspired by the valor of Veer Savarkar to bring glory to Mother India on the world stage,” Shri Shah said.
Modern Infrastructure and World-Class Facilities
The Veer Savarkar Sports Complex is designed to host both national and international sporting events. During recent competitions held in Ahmedabad, international sports federation representatives praised the complex as one of the most modern facilities in the world.
Key facilities include:
- Hostel accommodations for athletes and coaches
- Comprehensive medical and nutrition support
- State-of-the-art training halls and outdoor arenas
- A theater for performance analysis and technique improvement
- Seven entry gates with parking for 900 vehicles
- 275-kilowatt solar power plant and 60 KLD sewage treatment plant, making it a fully eco-friendly complex
The complex also features a Fit India Zone and an Outdoor Sports Zone, ensuring holistic development for athletes of all ages and skill levels.
Ahmedabad: Emerging as India’s Sports Capital
Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah emphasized Ahmedabad’s growing prominence as a hub for sports. The city already houses the world’s largest cricket stadium, the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Motera, and the nearby Sardar Patel Sports Complex is under further development. With the inauguration of the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, Ahmedabad is poised to become the epicenter of Indian sports infrastructure.
“The city is now equipped to host not just national but also international sporting events, and this will greatly benefit athletes and sports culture across the country,” Shri Shah said.
Government Initiatives Driving Sports Excellence
Highlighting the Government of India’s efforts over the past decade, Shri Amit Shah noted significant increases in budget allocation and structured reforms in sports policies. “In 2014–15, India’s sports budget was ₹1,643 crore. Today, under Prime Minister Modi, it stands at ₹5,300 crore,” he said.
This funding has supported the creation of:
- Khelo India centers and state centers of excellence
- Recognized sports academies and athlete training facilities
- Advanced medical, nutrition, and injury recovery programs
Under these initiatives, India has witnessed a remarkable transformation in international sports performance. From 1948 to 2012, India won just 20 Olympic medals. In the last eight years alone, Indian athletes have secured 15 Olympic medals, with Paralympic medals increasing from 8 to 52.
Launch of New Sports Policies and Programs
Union Home Minister also highlighted the Government’s launch of key programs such as the Khelo India University Games, Khelo India Para Games, and Khelo India Winter Games. The 2025 sports policy introduced by Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Mansukh Mandaviya emphasizes five guiding principles:
- India should remain at the forefront of global sports.
- Sports should contribute to economic growth.
- Sports should drive social development.
- Sports must become a movement for the people.
- Sports should be integrated into education.
These principles ensure that sports are not just about competition but also about national progress, youth empowerment, and international recognition.
Supporting Athletes for Global Glory
Under programs like TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme), athletes receive substantial financial and training support. “Core group athletes get ₹25,000 per month, while top-level Olympic athletes receive ₹50,000 per month,” Shri Shah explained. These initiatives have created a robust sports ecosystem that encourages young athletes to pursue excellence and represent India on global platforms.
The complex also provides access to nutrition experts, physiotherapists, and state-of-the-art recovery facilities to ensure that every athlete achieves their peak potential.
