Maharashtra Govt and Vantara Unite in Supreme Court Plea to Bring Back Madhuri Elephant

The campaign to bring back Madhuri elephant to her original home in Kolhapur has gained significant momentum, as Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that Vantara, the Jamnagar-based animal welfare organization, will support the State Government’s petition in the Supreme Court. This collaborative effort aims to ensure that Madhuri, the 36-year-old female elephant, returns to the Jain monastery in Nandani, Kolhapur, where she lived for over three decades.

Background of Madhuri’s Relocation

Madhuri, also lovingly known as Mahadevi, had been residing at the Shri Jinsen Bhattarak Pattacharya Mahaswami Jain monastery for more than thirty years. However, concerns were raised about her health and psychological well-being by an NGO, prompting intervention by the Maharashtra Forest Department and the Supreme Court-appointed High-Powered Committee (HPC). Following these concerns, the Bombay High Court, on July 16, 2025, ordered Madhuri’s relocation to Vantara’s Radhe Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust in Jamnagar, Gujarat, for rehabilitation.

Subsequently, the Supreme Court upheld this decision on July 25. Acting on the court’s orders, Madhuri was shifted to the Vantara facility. However, this move sparked emotional responses from the local community in Kolhapur, who felt deeply attached to the elephant. They expressed their sentiments through peaceful protests, including a massive ‘silent march’ on Sunday, demanding her return.

Vantara Clarifies Its Role

Vantara, while addressing the controversy, clarified that it did not initiate or request Madhuri’s relocation. The organization emphasized that it merely served as a “court-appointed recipient facility” and was executing the orders passed by the judiciary. The team highlighted that their primary focus has always been the welfare and rehabilitation of rescued animals, not the forceful acquisition of any animal from its rightful home.

Chief Minister Fadnavis Steps In

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, taking note of the public sentiment, held a detailed discussion with the Vantara team in Mumbai. After the meeting, he shared a positive update on social media, stating, “I had an extensive discussion with the Vantara team today in Mumbai. The good news is that they assured me they are happy to join Maharashtra Government’s petition before the Hon’ble Supreme Court for the smooth passage of the elephant Madhuri back to the Math.”

Fadnavis reiterated that the Vantara team is acting strictly under the orders of the Supreme Court and has no intention of claiming custody over Madhuri. Their primary concern, like that of the Government, is ensuring the elephant’s health and well-being.

Proposal for a Rehabilitation Center in Kolhapur

In a significant development, Vantara has proposed to collaborate with the Maharashtra Government in establishing a dedicated rehabilitation center for Madhuri near Nandani in Kolhapur. This center will be built at a site selected by the State’s Forest Department and will ensure that Madhuri receives proper medical care while staying close to her spiritual and community roots.

The Vantara team also expressed deep respect for the religious sentiments associated with Madhuri. They emphasized that their intention has never been to hurt the emotions of the Jain community or the people of Kolhapur. Their willingness to build a local rehab center is a step towards addressing both the health concerns of Madhuri and the emotional connection the community shares with her.

The Road Ahead

With Vantara now joining forces with the Maharashtra Government, the petition in the Supreme Court gains stronger ground. The focus remains on presenting a united front that prioritizes Madhuri’s health while respecting the cultural and religious sentiments of the community.

The establishment of a rehabilitation center near her monastery could serve as a long-term solution, allowing Madhuri to live out her years in familiar surroundings, with proper veterinary care and attention. This approach reflects a balance between animal welfare and community values.

The joint effort by the Government and Vantara signifies a compassionate and practical pathway to resolving the matter. All eyes are now on the upcoming Supreme Court hearings, where the collective plea to bring back Madhuri elephant will be presented with renewed strength.
